![]() ![]() Both books started off well for me and both had writing styles I thought were fine and accessible. This one was a close call, but it was easier to skim parts and still have the gist of the book. This was a rough go after trying to read A Suitable Boy which arguably could be called the Indian Vanity Fair and being unable to finish that. But honestly, I just didn't care at all about the characters or what happened to them. The book skewers a lot about the society at the time and the social mores, so I can see why this might have been a great read in the past. It probably was cutting edge at the time to have a book revolve around a ruthless woman, but I just don't think there's anything exciting about that storyline now. It's basically a soap opera that drowns in its own details. Other than that, it is basically a family saga with lots of sisters, brothers, cousins weaving in and out of the story. We follow both as find husbands and attempt to establish their place in the world. ![]() Amelia is from a well off family and is extremely sweet and kind to everyone whose path she crosses. Becky with no money and no social standing is relentlessly driven to achieve both and nothing will stand in her way. It started off okay as the story of two women with very different backgrounds and attitudes. Loooooooonnnnnnnggggg and borrrriiiiinnnnnnngggggg. ![]() ![]() She embodies a striving for real independence, a struggle which is as relevant now as it was then. This is a very good book.Ĭlarissa, the main character, is a woman struggling against the manacles of convention and class. There are minor nitpicks that I, as a writer, could point out, but they're insignificant. The narrative flowed, and the dialogue was, on the whole good. I read this in three days and really enjoyed it. ![]() And there's an edge to the gentle voice of the early 20th century, an edge which, as far as I'm concerned, declared its hatred of war - and not just because the war causes the narrator pain, but because war is evil, full stop, regardless of whose side you're on. The voice is pitch perfect, for me, and drew me into a different era. ![]() This is the kind of book you can disappear into. I react viscerally to what I read, and my reviews always reflect this. ![]() I am not one of those reviewers who can, or wants to, recount the plot of the book under review. ![]() ![]() ![]() Grace is a cool girl, self-assured, supportive, and compassionate, a far difference from the first few chapters. Now, he’s decided to focus on his family after graduation, leaving his dreams behind, and I’m relieved that it hasn’t come to that. I didn’t foresee Logan going through hardship, having a terrible upbringing, having to deal with his parent’s divorce and the consequences. Logan was funny, carefree, and talked about what he had in his mind. ![]() The best part was when he recognized his emotions and did not mourn his actions but rather show to Grace that he was worthy of her. It’s felt off in the start and, after realizing that Logan was craving only the love Hannah has for Garrett. Logan had a thing for Hannah, then he liked Grace, who was the polar opposite of Hannah. Logan needed Grace more than anything else, yet he messed by letting her leave. ![]() Reading this book made me realize that every friend knows their friend’s problems, but at a certain point, regardless of how close they are and boys are always afraid to share their problems, no matter how close they are. Logan led me to the book more smoothly, and I connected with him more easily, maybe because of the previous book. ![]() Image belongs to it’s owner & Edited by Canva Rating - 4.5 / 5 My Review ![]() ![]() ![]() Her most recent publication is The Silk Road: A New History-for which she received the 2013 International Convention of Asia Scholars Book Prize Reading Committee Accolade for the best teaching tool in the Humanities. We recently sat down with Carr to discuss some of his weapon choices. Instead, you’ll find uniquely chosen and often graphically applied weapons and tools. What you won’t find in his pages are scenes where striker-fired Glocks make a hammer cocking sound to emphasize a character’s threatening tone. It also brings true-life realism in their application. Carr thoughtfully chooses his character’s guns, knives, watches, vehicles and technology to inform the reader of a particular character’s background. Some tug at your heart, while others make you laugh out loud. However, readers will be amazed at each individual story. Enjoy!Ĭarly Berg is a talented writer whose words come off the pages and bring to life the stories. Repeating themes include: people-as-animals, people losing themselves and finding themselves (and sometimes wishing they hadn’t), childhood in the psychedelic seventies, reality TV, marriage, twisted religion, and of course the gotta have ’em he-done-me wrongs. Tales vary from realistic to humorous to surreal, and family-friendly to adult. Stories in this collection have received nominations for the 2013 Pushcart Prize, Micro Award, and Wigleaf Long List. Nearly all of them have been published before individually, in numerous print and online magazines and anthologies. The 100 stories in this quirky collection range from a few sentences to a few pages. These fun-sized stories are just right for a coffee break, public commute, waiting room, bedtime story, or any other time you want a quick trip without leaving the farm. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Compiled by the editors of Brick: A Literary Magazine, Lost Classics is a reader’s delight: an intriguing and entertaining collection of eulogies for lost books.
